Poems to go

Poems to go

for my mother – wish you were here

Bilanz
Mein Sehn und Tun und Nachgedacht
Was hats eingebracht:

Tulipa, Viola
Tulpen und Veilchen – tulip and violets – tulipa y violeta

I am Vertical
But I would rather be horizontal.
I am not a tree with my root in the soil
Sucking up minerals and motherly love
So that each March I may gleam into leaf,
Nor am I the beauty of a garden bed
Attracting my share of Ahs and spectacularly painted,
Unknowing I must soon unpetal.
Compared with me, a tree is immortal
And a flower-head not tall, but more startling,
And I want the one’s longevity and the other’s daring.
Tonight, in the infinitesimal light of the stars,
The trees and the flowers have been strewing their cool odors.
I walk among them, but none of them are noticing.
Sometimes I think that when I am sleeping
I must most perfectly resemble them –
Thoughts gone dim.
It is more natural to me, lying down.
Then the sky and I are in open conversation,
And I shall be useful when I lie down finally:
Then the trees may touch me for once, and the flowers have time for me.

Red Roses
Tommy is three and when he’s bad
his mother dances with him.
She puts on the record,
“Red Roses for a Blue Lady”
and throws him across the room.
Mind you,
she never laid a hand on him.
He gets red roses in different places,
the head, that time he was as sleepy as a river,
the back, that time he was a broken scarecrow,
the arm like a diamond had bitten it,
the leg, twisted like a licorice stick,
all the dance they did together,
Blue Lady and Tommy.
You fell, she said, just remember you fell.
I fell, is all he told the doctors
in the big hospital. A nice lady came
and asked him questions but because
he didn’t want to be sent away he said, I fell.
He never said anything else although he could talk fine.
He never told about the music
or how she’d sing and shout
holding him up and throwing him.

He pretends he is her ball.
He tries to fold up and bounce
but he squashes like fruit.
For he loves Blue Lady and the spots
of red roses he gives her

Palabras a mi madre

Words to my mother
I don’t ask for great truths, because I see
You wouldn’t answer, I only want to know
If, as it passed over the dark patios below,
The moon was witness to your carrying me.

And if when, at your breast of latin emotion
I slept and listened, a hoarse and sonorous sea
Lulled you to sleep, and you watched to see
The birds dive into the gold twilight ocean.

For my soul travels far and is full of flight;
When the new moon rises to the deep blue night,
It is enveloped in a light and lunatic cloud.

And when they are opened, the censers of the sea
It likes to watch the birds pass without destiny
Lulled by a sailor’s song, clear and loud.

Werde ich dir einmal begegnen?
Nach drei Wegen im Regen bilde
im Erwachen dein Gegenbild: er,
der Magier. Engel weben dich in
den Drachenleib. Ringe im Wege,
lange beim Regen werd ich dein.

Will I meet you sometime?
After three ways in the rain image
when waking your counterimage: he,
the magician. Angels weave you in
the dragonbody. Rings in the way,
long in the rain I become yours.

Birke und Holunderblüte – birch and elder – abedul y sauco

I know, I’ll die at twilight!

I know, I’ll die at twilight! On which of the two,
Wich one of the two – cannot be decided by my wish!
Ah, if it were possible, to extinguish my torch twice!
So that I could leave at sunset and in the morning!

Heaven’s daughter! Who danced on this earthy ground! –
With an apron full of roses! – without breaking one!
I know, I’ll die at twilight! – Not in the hawkish night
God will not send me my swan-soul!

Gently I reject the hand offering a cross, unkissed
To rush into a generous heaven with a last greeting.
At the crack of dawn – I’ll answer with a cracked smile
– Poet I’ll remain to my death’s last rattle!

    Huuui Poesie
